Between late romanticism and the earliest modernity
The names Liszt, Strauss and Berg inspire great expectations, but recordings of their songs are hardly among them. The reason for this is simple: most amateur musicians and indeed some experts are not aware that Franz Liszt and Alban Berg set songs to music. Only Strauss’ songs have achieved any popularity. And this is what is surprising about this CD: it mixes rarities with repertoire pieces which have maintained a life of their own in the concert hall.

Violeta Urmana's beautiful voice and powerfully expressive singing enliven this well-planned lieder recital on FARAO… This is as fine a disc of lieder singing as you'll likely find today, and it's excellently recorded to boot.
