Olivier Tardy first studied in the city of his birth, Clermont-Ferrand, and afterwards at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. Since 1996 he has been principal flautist at the Bavarian State Opera, and has played under such illustrious conductors as Claudio Abbado, Seiji Ozawa, Zubin Mehta, Günter Wand and Daniel Barenboim.
Now in demand as a conductor, he has performed with numerous orchestras including the Berlin Symphony Orchestra with the chorus of the Deutsche Oper, the Munich Symphony Orchestra, the Northwest German Philharmonic, the Presidential Symphony Orchestra in Ankara, and the Orchestre de Cannes.
An important element of Olivier Tardy’s career so far has been his commitment to working with young people. He was the first conductor of the Bavarian State Orchestra’s youth orchestra which was founded in 2007, and in addition to this he conducted the Munich University Abaco Orchestra for five years. In 2009 at the invitation of Brigitte Fassbaender he conducted the Youth Orchestra at the Richard Strauss Festival in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In 2010 under the auspices of the Munich Opera Festival Olivier Tardy conducted the Schönberg/Riehn version of Mahler’s "Das Lied von der Erde". In 2011 he is due to make his debut at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris conducting the Orchestre Lamoureux.
