Dietrich Henschel gave his stage debut at the Biennale Munich in 1990, followed by a number of engagements at German theatres and concert performances throughout Europe. Mr. Henschel appeared at important festivals, a.o. the Schubertiade Wien and Feldkirch, Musikfest Stuttgart, Beethovenfest Bonn, Musiktage Bad Urach, Richard Strauss Festival Garmisch and Schleswig Holstein Musikfestival.
From 1993 to 1995 Dietrich Henschel was member of the Opera House Kiel, where he sang important roles like Papageno, Count (Le Nozze), Figaro (Barbiere), Valentin, Pelleas, Eisenstein, Homburg (Henze), Orfeo (Monteverdi and Cluck) and Dr. Faust (Busoni).
1996 he started with regular appearances at the Opera Houses in Bonn, Stuttgart, Lyon and Berlin, where he was extremely successful at the Deutsche Oper with Henze's "Prinz von Homburg" in 1997. His great personal success with Busoni's "Dr. Faust" in the Strosser/Nagano production of this work in Lyon was immediately followed by numerous engagements at important houses throughout Europe:
Chatelet Paris (Alcèste 1999, Dr. Faust 2000, Die schweigsame Frau 2001. Die Soldaten 2004), Bastille/Paris (Pelleas 2000), Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam (Capriccio 2000), Opéra de Genève (Barbiere 2000, Le Nozze 2002), Maggio Musicale Firenze (Penthesilea 2001, Meistersinger 2004), Köln (Don Giovanni 2002), Zürich (Ulisse 2002). Komische Oper Berlin (Don Giovanni 2003), Aix-en-Provence (Wozzeck 2003).
On the concert stage Dietrich Henschel performs with important orchestras like Wiener Philharmoniker, Berliner Philharmoniker, Concertgebouworkest, London Symphony, Orchestra de Paris, Orchestre National Radio France, Suisse Romande and all orchestras of the German radio stations. He is working with conductors like Harnoncourt, Herreweghe, Hogwood, Gardiner, Rilling, Guttenberg, Albrecht, Järvi, Sinopoli, Nagano, Luisi, Thielemann and Mehta.
A very important part of his activities is the singing of lieder: his accompanists in numerous recitals are Irwin Cage, Fritz Schwinghammer, Helmut Deutsch. Leonard Hokanson and Shinya Okahara, with whom he is tourring regularly in Japan since 1996.
Among his important recordings are Busoni's "Dr. Faust", G.F. Handel's "Messiah", Hugo Wolf's "Mörike Lieder" Schubert's "Schöne Müllerin" and the recently released "Winterreise" with Irwin Gage as part of the artist's exclusiv contract with TELDEC/WARNER. Due for release will be shortly Bach's "St.Matthews Passion" with Harnoncourt, the Paris production of Gluck's "Alcèste" (Gardiner) and Mahler's orchestra songs with the Hall & Orchestra and Nagano.
