Hans-Jakob Eschenburg received his first 'cello lesson at the age of five. His entire childhood and youth was interspersed with successful competitions and solo appearances.
H.-J. Eschenburg studied under Professor Josef Schwab at the "Hans Eisler" Musikhochschule in Berlin from 1975 to 1984.
In 1979 he was a founding member of the Petersen Quartet, to which he belonged until 2000. From 1984 to 1988 he was engaged as first principal cellist in the Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra after which followed a permanent position in the Petersen Quartet in the Funkhaus (broadcasting house) in Berlin. His freelance activities have included various teaching positions; and in the next few years he will be undertaking intensive concert activity with numerous artists of note in important centres of music. Having occupied the position of first principal cellist of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra's, "C.P.E. Bach Chamber Orchestra", H.-J. Eschenburg took up from March 2002 to March 2003 the same position in the Berlin State Orchestra. He is a member of the Aperto Piano Quartet.
Numerous prize winning CD recordings bear witness to his artistry.
