Recorded live at the
Bavarian State Opera 1997-2005

The repertoire of the Bavarian State Opera covers almost a time span of 352 years, which means it goes almost exactly as far back as the history of opera in Munich. It is a difficult task to choose from a repertoire this size for merely one CD.
We decided to concentrate on the two conductors whose individual musical styles have had a forming influence on the Bavarian State Opera and the Bavarian State Orchestra since 1994.
In July 1994, Zubin Mehta stood behind the conductor’s desk of the State Opera for the very first time for the premier of Tannhäuser. Munich fell in love with him immediately, and he loved the Munich Opera, so in 1998, he decided to become Bavarian Music Director.
Another conductor, who was unheard-of at the time, also made his debut in 1994: Ivor Bolton, without whom the unprecedented renaissance of Baroque in Munich would have been impossible.
But the anthology also presents a few singers, who are closely connected to the Bavarian State Opera: Waltraud Meier, Robert Gambill, Martin Gantner, Ann Murray, Anna Caterina Antonacci, David Daniels, Dorothea Röschmann, Vesselina Kasarova, and Anja Harteros.
