BIOGRAPHY

Finishing her musical studies at the Frankfurter conservatory, Gabriele Schnaut went to East Berlin to accomplish her studies.

As a Mezzo-Sopran she started her career at the Staatsoper Stuttgart, followed by performances at the Staatstheater Darmstadt and the Nationaltheater Mannheim. There, she subsequently began to work in the dramatic soprano field. Soon after she regularly appeared at the Deutsche Oper Düsseldorf (Brünnhilde, Ortrud, Lady Macbeth) and at the Staatsoper Hamburg (Kundry, Ortrud, Isolde, Els in Franz Schrekers SCHATZGRÄBER).
Since 1977 Gabriele Schnaut has been a regular guest singer at the Bayreuther Festspiele (Sieglinde, Venus, Ortrud).

Interpreting modern music she recorded some early opera works of Paul Hindemith under Gerd Albrecht, furthermore pieces of Franz Schreker (SCHATZGRÄBER and DER FERNE KLANG). She sang Leonore in the FIDELIO-recording under Christoph von Dohnanyi.

In 1985 Gabriele Schnaut made her international debut with Sieglinde in Genf (1985). In 1988 she appeared as Ortrud and 1998 as Sieglinde at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London. A year later Ms Schnaut sang Isolde in the first Japanese performance of TRISTAN UND ISOLDE in Tokio and in 1991 she was invited to sing the same part in San Francisco, her first performance in the USA.

January 1992 she was engaged to sing Isolde at the Staatsoper Wien – two months later she had her role debut as Elektra at the Opéra de la Bastille in Paris. September 1992, Gabriele Schnaut sang the same role at the Taormina festival under Giuseppe Sinopoli which was followed by her debut as Ortrud/LOHENGRIN at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

On the occasion of the Olympic Summer Games (1992) in Barcelona, Ms Schnaut participated in the Harry Kupfer production of TANNHÄUSER (Staatsoper Hamburg) as Venus. Besides that, she appeared as soloist in the performance "Gurre-Lieder" by Arnold Schönberg under Gerd Albrecht. Lateron she performed as Brünnhilde in the opera WALKÜRE in Hamburg produced by Günter Krämer again together with conductor Gerd Albrecht. In 1993 she was engaged to perform in SIEGFRIED, in GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG. Moreover she recorded parts of WALKÜRE under Christoph von Dohnanyi in Cleveland.
